Most guys need a well-balanced and effective tool in order to give his skills in the workshop any meaning.
A mechanic without a wrench is just some dude near a bunch of cars.
A doctor without a stethoscope is some stranger touching your chest.
And a hobbyist without a drill press is a poor lonely soul in a workshop surrounded by wood with nothing to do.
Let's take a look at Mike*
Mike enjoys de-stressing and expressing his creative side by building wooden structures and furniture. He has usually been satisfied with his finished products, and his neighbors have taken notice and offered to purchase a few of his pieces.
However, the hand-made holes he has been drilling have not been consistent enough for his liking and they have made matching structural pieces a nightmare.
Luckily, Mike found solution for his problem and a vessel to expand his creative interests all in one package.
Meet the WEN 4208 8-Inch 5 Speed Drill Press. This powerful benchtop drill press tool is made by WEN, who are a respectable power tool company founded in 1951 and headquartered in Illinois.
An innovator in their field, WEN was the first to develop random orbital technology, the engineering feat which allows for modern day circular sanders to exist. This history of innovation and leadership is now doubt reflected in their drill press, with it remaining the best seller on Amazon in the benchtop drill press category.
The drill press itself is remarkable in terms of it’s technical specifications. The backbone of the WEN 4208 8-Inch 5 Speed Drill Press is it’s 1/3 HP motor reinforced with ball bearings in order to ensure steady and consistent power. This motor backs up a 5 speed adjustable spindle from 740 all the way up to 3140 RPM, enabling craftsmen to tailor the speed of their machine to the demands of their materials.
At each of the five speeds available, users will be able to drill through wood, plastic, or even metal up to 8 inches in diameter and 2 inches thick.
This power, speed, and range all comes atop a beveling worktable which leaves users the ability to move the table 45 degrees in either direction for a range of other drilling applications. In built slots allow for the placement of vises and clamps to further improve usability.
The structural components of WEN’s Drill Press are equally as impressive.
Holding the system together is a cast iron base with pre-made bolt holes. Constructing this like so has two benefits, the former being increased stability to prevent mistakes during drilling applications and the latter for easily mounting the machine to a bench top of the users choosing.
The keyed chuck measures 1/2 inch, considered to be a standard size. This enables a diverse range of drill bits to be used with the added plus of this drill press being able to house previous drill bits should buyers be upgrading to a new system.
Artisans, craftsman, and casual “DIY-ers” typically prefer their machines to be no frills affairs, but WEN has added a few ease of use features which are not overly ancillary. The first is a depth adjustment gauge. Easy to adjust, this feature helps ensure accuracy and prevents future headaches by allowing users to set exactly how far their spindle should travel.
Second is on board key storage. Keeping the key with the machine is probably decent shop etiquette to most anyways, and this helps minimize the frustration of losing something so small while not adding unnecessary features to the workstation.
While WEN appears to have outdone themselves overall with this product, some features seemed particularly superior and worth mentioning to both ourselves and from user reviews online.
First is the motor. Strong, durable, and versatile, those who have purchased the WEN 4208 Bench Top Drill Press rave about the consistent power and praise the peace of mind that comes about from not having to fear breakdowns.
Second is the adjustable speed variance. With RPM settings at 740, 1100, 1530, 2100, or 3140, tailoring the speed of your workstation to the demands of your materials (be they wood, plastic, or metal) is an essential must have that this workstation absolutely possesses.
Lastly, and not heretofore mentioned, users absolutely love the fact that this product is low noise. If you like to burn the midnight oil, your neighbors no longer have to hate you for it.
As with any great product, WEN’s 4208 8-Inch Benchtop Drill Press does have its imperfections.
We scoured through many reviews trying to find consistently recurring problems and came up with two.
The first is an apparent lack of an easy user interface.
Although WEN included features purportedly to prevent this problem, they may have missed their mark as some users complain of difficulty when trying to use their workstation.
The second problem we discovered was a tendency to wobble. It is important to preface this point knowing that some users may have incorrectly installed their WEN drill press, however without their implicit statement affirming this we can only assume that some units have balance issues which can be a big problem when precise drilling is necessary.
Whether you are an amateur artisan like Mike, looking to expand your workshop and hobbies or a consummate professional on the hunt for new equipment, the WEN 4208 8-Inch Benchtop Drill Press is for you.
The WEN 4208 8-Inch 5 Speed Drill Press is powerful enough for any wood alongside thin metal, a dual functionality usually only found in table top drill presses and not their smaller cousin. It is adjustable enough to conquer a range of densities in different materials and at different angles.
The WEN 4208 8-Inch 5 Speed Drill Press is easy enough to use, AND anyone with an interest and an hour of time to learn can make use of this benchtop drill press right out of the box.
* Please note, any resemblance of a typical woodshop guy named Mike is purely coincidental!
